Welcome to Monsters in Cinema
I am Professor Bynny and my assistant is Daphne Marin. This class will focus on the study of different monsters and creatures portrayed in film. We will examine a multitude of creatures like Ghost/supernatural, Zombies, the Boogeyman/Freddy Kruger, Vampires, Werewolves, lake monsters, etc.... This class will focus on the different monsters/creatures we have seen from the early cinema to modern day perception. We will show the basic "rules" of these monsters and how over time the "rules" have changed on how they act. Also We will examine the monsters in cinema to those in the Harry Potter Universe and how they relate to each other. I will mention films that are family oriented & more adult oriented just to show the wide spectrum of how monsters are used in film. If you wish to view the movies and are underage, feel free to ask your parents permission to get them to rent the movies for you.***DISCLAIMER***
Since some of these films are rated "R" (American rating meaning no one under the age of 17 can view them without a parent or guardian) I will be taking out most of the graphic content due to the ages of the students on HOL. This is just precaution. However, there may be some content that will be mentioned but it will be purely kept at a PG-13 level. There will be some trailers or video clips shown to further demonstrate the lesson. BUT NO R-RATED VIOLENCE shall be shown. If you feel that this class is too much for you once you started it, feel free to email me or my assistant and I will drop you from the course.
Quills and points!
This is a full term class. You can get 2 quills for this class; 1 per term. In order to pass the term you need to do at least THREE (3) HW assignments and the Midterm. The same process goes for the 2nd term. As for points, you can earn a total of 300 points per term. There will be 4 Homework Assignments and 4 Extra Credit assignment each worth 30 points each (8x30=240 points). There will also be a half term project worth 30 points and the Midterm/Final worth 30 points also. This all equals 300 points. Since this is a year course, there is a possible 600 points available. There will be awards given out to students that I feel best understand the subject matter, most points per term, most points per year, and the most presitgious award, if one can get it...the perfect marks award. This award will be given out to the student(s) that receive a perfect 300 per term or even 600 for the year (I did have two(2) perfect term scores in my previous class so this is possible).
Homework...MWahahaha!
This is course is a writing intensive course. Most homework will be essays and short answer questions. This is because this class is not a rightto watch every movie discussed here, but it would be helpful if you are a fan of movies, particularly a fan of horror, since we usually associate monsters with horror movies.
Its a course to discuss monsters in all forms throughout cinematic history. Most of the movies are rated "R" (American rating) but there will be no lesson/discussion that will be above the PG-13 level. All video clips will be carefully watched before placed on this website to make sure all graphic violence is taken out. However, these clips are not required to watched but to help you understand the progression of monsters throught film. Again, this is not a course to discuss horror movies.
